About this place
Kyoto-style herring soba is a good choice if you want to enjoy sweet-simmered herring alongside the dashi. Diners have described the herring as tender, with a sweetness that pairs well with both the noodles and the broth. Another option is Kyoto yuba and egg soba, which combines yuba with egg in a thickened broth; one diner particularly noted the yuba’s firm texture. Both cost 1,200 yen. For a hot bowl, the choice between the distinctive sweetness of herring and the thickness of a yuba broth is part of the appeal.
At lunchtime, there is also a set that pairs soba with a mini rice bowl. Choose one of zaru soba, kitsune soba or ume soba, then add a mini bowl topped with egg or kitsune tofu, for 1,200 yen. It works for a lunch centred on soba or a fuller meal with a small rice bowl.
For a more leisurely meal, the casual drinks set comes with 1 drink and 2 dishes of obanzai, Japanese home-style side dishes. One lunchtime diner chose draft beer, sweet-simmered herring and rolled omelette, then ordered chicken nanban soba afterwards. Starting with a drink and small plates before moving on to noodles is another way to enjoy Soba Hatsuneya, alongside a quick bowl at lunchtime.
